A SERIES of photos shows a Russian policeman smashing his fist into the faces of a young mother and her tiny daughter. The photos are disgusting, appalling, horrible.
And yet they will come as no surprise to anyone who has read the book at number one on the bestseller list, Anthony Beevor’s Berlin: The Downfall, 1945.
The Russians have always been as cruel as any nation on earth. They even rivalled Nazi Germany in the brutality stakes. There is a sentimental attachment to the Russians in this country, especially among old Labour comrades.
But Beevor’s bookon Nazi Germany’s collapse reports how the Red Army “liberators” raped any female they came across. Not just German women. The Red Army also raped Jewish concentration camp victims.
They raped the wives and daughters of imprisoned German communists. They even raped Russian women and girls who had been forced into slave labour by the Nazis. A Russian fist in the face of a mother and child is completely in character.
Other countries erect a tomb to the unknown soldier. In Russia it would be more appropriate to put up a monument to the unknown rapist.
